Let’s go, Atami! Let’s rise up stronger than ever, Atami!
On July 3, 2021, the Izusan area of Atami City was hit by a heartbreaking disaster. We human beings sometimes feel sadly helpless when we are in the middle of a disaster like this one, and I'm sure that even the strongest among us feel at least a small amount of helplessness well up in our hearts.
But we are not helpless. HOTEL NEW AKAO (and its HERB & ROSE GARDEN) and the surrounding area were not affected by the torrential rains and were about 4km away from the disaster area, so we were able to provide a safe environment for the victims. We began by providing simple traditional Japanese meals to the victims and thought that there must be something more we could do. First we held out our hands to offer support; gradually our arms stretched out to offer a full embrace. Specifically, we provided rooms and use of our hot spring facilities and laundromats to the victims and provided a helipad for receiving relief supplies. Our support efforts were not perfect, and they may have lacked power, but certainly we were not helpless.
In the midst of our struggles, the words of encouragement and relief supplies we received from all over Japan gave us great courage and hope. On behalf of all of Atami, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you. We are really, really truly thankful.
Here is what HOTEL NEW AKAO should do now. We believe that it’s our responsibility to help Atami City rise up again stronger than before; we feel emboldened to share its charms with the rest of Japan and the rest of the world and do what is necessary to pass along its character and vitality to the next generation. Our hearts are strong and our eyes are looking up and looking forward to the future. The restoration of roads and tourist spots around the disaster area is already underway, and we can see many positive signs of progress: gradually the flow of people and goods is returning to the streets and the city.
In conclusion I would like to humbly request your continued warm support.
Last but not least…
To my fellow workers at HOTEL NEW AKAO:
Your compassion and dedication to others…your courage and your energy…are truly amazing.
You fill me with warmth and pride. Thank you.
